He was the second child and eldest son of the six children of Lt-Col. Mervyn Edward George Rhys Wingfield, D.L., J.P., and his wife Florence Marguerite Erle Benson. He was born at Barrington Park in 1922.

Educated at Eton, he Matriculated in 1940 and was up at Christ Church for a year.

He was a leading Aircraftman when he was killed, accidentally, whilst training in Saskatchewan, Canada with the Royal Air Force.

He is buried in the Moose Jaw [Rosedale] Cemetery Lot 8. Block 10. Grave 286 along with 35 other members of the RAF who died in Canada.

He is commemorated on the War Memorial at Great Barrington, near Burford. Oxfordshire.
