Randal Alexander was born in Chelsea, the son of Randal Casson, a solicitor in Portmadoc with the firm of Breese, Jones and Casson (to whom the young David Lloyd George was articled) and his wife, Lucy Jane.
Educated at Winchester, he came up to Christ Church from 1912-1915 and was a member of the University Contingent of the Officers‘ Training Corps. He commenced Service in September 1915, as 2nd Lieutenant, Acting Adjt., Royal Welch Fusiliers, and served in France and Belgium.
Three officers from the 2nd Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers were killed in action at Polygon Wood on the afternoon of 26 September 1917 within a few minutes of each other: Major Roger Alvin Poore , 2nd Lt. Randall Alexander Casson and 2nd Lt. Ernest Forbes Campbell Colquhoun. They were buried beside each other in bed LV-F-grave row 11, 12 and 13.
The well-known actor Sir Lewis Casson was Randal’s first cousin. Another first cousin, one of Lewis’s brothers, was killed at Loos.
