Richard Herschel was born in Kensington, the second son of Henry Arthur Whateley and his wife, Margaret Alice Edith. His father was a solicitor who lived at Laurel Lodge, Dancers Hill, Barnet in Middlesex for many years.

Richard was educated at Eton and came up to Christ Church in 1913.

He joined the 5th Rifle Brigade [The Prince Consort’s Own] in November 1914 and was killed in action on or about 25 August 1916.

His name is on Panel 129 on the Loos Memorial.

Probate was granted to his father on 16 October 1917. He left £2042-3s-6d.
