Francis Charles Probert was born in Bristol, the son of Charles Herbert Goodwin, and Kate Susannah nee Probert. In 1891 and 1901 censuses Charles is shown as an ‘electric writer and painter’, and Kate as an ‘organist and professional musician’.

When he was 14 years old, the 1901 census shows Francis living at 4 Brewer Street in Oxford, a chorister in the Cathedral.

On 18 November 1915, Francis enlisted, his address shown as 23 Victoria Drive, Eastbourne.

Pte Goodwin is remembered on the War Memorial at All Saints Church, Eastbourne
