Hugh Handley was born at Terrick Hall, Whitchurch in Shropshire, the only son of Samuel Henry Sandbach and his cousin Elizabeth Sandbach.
He came up to Christ Church in 1897 and may have joined the 1st Dragoon Guards about the same time, as he was gazetted Lieutenant on 23 August 1901. Hugh’s cousin Gilbert Robertson Sandbach came up in 1910 and was killed in 1917.
He served for twelve years with the Dragoons, serving in the South African War.
He moved to the Kedowa Estate in Kenya’s Rift Valley and at the outbreak of World War I commanded the East African Mounted Rifles.
The East African Mounted Rifles lost ten men in action at Longido including their CO, Captain H.H. Sandbach.
He is commemorated on the War Memorial at St Oswald’s Church, Malpas, Cheshire and on the Muthaiga Club War Memorial, Nairobi:

Hugh’s Estate amounted to £31,265.9.6d. Probate was granted on 11 February 1915 to Major William Sandbach (who was later killed at Gallipoli).
