Herbert Melville was born in Reading, the second son of Frances Henry, Registrar at University College, Reading, and Agnes Mary Wright.
Herbert started his degree at Reading University in 1913, but having achieved a ‘First Examination for the degree of B. Mus. May 1914‘, he commenced Service in 1914 as an Ambulance Driver, attd French Army, and later appointed 2nd Lieutenant Yorkshire Regiment, serving in France 1915, 1917.
He was killed in action on 2 April 1917.
Herbert’s name appears on the Reading University College First World War Memorial which is located on the London Road Campus of the University. It takes the form of a clock tower with a bronze plaque inside made up of four panels of inscribed names.
(There is no known link with Christ Church but 2nd Lt Wright’s name appears with others thought to have been choristers or college servants.)
