Geoffrey Nield was born in Baildon, Shipley, Yorkshire, the third son of William, Worsted Spinner, of Bradford in Yorkshire and Sarah A Whitehead.
He was educated at Castlemount College in Dover, Shrewsbury, and Christ Church, graduating in 1907.
Before joining the Army he was associated with his father in the business of Messrs. W & J Whitehead, New Lane Mills, Laisterdyke, Yorkshire. In 1913 he married Kathleen, daughter of the late W M McLaren and Mrs McLaren of Bradford, with whom he had a son.
He commenced Service December 1916, was commissioned as a Probationary 2nd Lieutenant on the General List of the Royal Flying Corps on 25 May 1917. He served in France and Belgium, and died of his injuries near Ypres 15 October 1917.
“Second Lieutenant GEOFFREY NEILD WHITEHEAD, R.F.C., of Reevadale, Menston-in-Wharfedale, and of Messrs. W. and J. Whitehead, worsted spinners, New Lane Mills, Laisterdyke, who was killed in Belgium on October 15th, left property of the gross value of £136,508, with net personality £133,641.”
Geoffrey’s brother, Captain A G Whitehead, of the Royal Flying Corps, was killed on 29 January 1918.
