Ludovic Heathcoat was the son of Sir John Heathcoat Heathcoat-Amory, 1st Baronet, and Henrietta Mary nee Unwin.
He was educated at Eton College in Miss J M Evan’s House, went up to Oxford in 1900, and played cricket for the University in 1902-03. In 1904 he undertook a tour of South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand with his Oxford friend Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, later the 1st Earl of Halifax.
He married Mary Stuart Bannatyne, daughter of James Fitzgerald Bannatyne on 12 July 1911.
Ludovic commenced Service in October 1914, in the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry, attached to the Royal Artillery and to the Headquarters of 32nd Division. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 31 December 1914, to Temporary Major on 29 August 1916, and to Staff-Captain RA on 15 January 1917. He went to France on 14 December 1916 and served in France and Belgium. Mentioned in Dispatches. Died at Bayonvillers, France on 25 August 1918 from wounds received in action.

They had three children Patrick Gerald Heathcoat-Amory born 1912 killed in El Alamein 1942; Michael Ludovic Heathcoat-Amory born 1914 killed in an aeroplane accident 1936; Edgar Fitzgerald Heathcoat-Amory born 1917 killed in Normandy 1944.
