Marcus was born in Rugby, the son of Arthur Hamilton Raikes and his wife Minnie Audrey Wise. She had been born in Australia where her father, Edward Wise, had been a Judge of the Supreme Court in Sydney. Arthur Raikes had a Preparatory School at The College, Windermere.
Marcus Matriculated in 1908. He rowed in the college boat at Henley in 1909 at the weight of 13st 1lb.
In April 1912, he went to Naples by sea.
He joined the 4th (Cumberland & Westmorland) Battalion of the Border Regiment on 5 December 1912 and was serving with them during 1914 with the rank of Second Lieutenant.
He was transferred to the Indian Army Reserve of Officers Cavalry Branch from the l/4th Battalion, Border Regiment on 15 September 1915, but to date from 5 August 1914 with the rank of Lieutenant.
In 1916, he married Isabel C Kennedy in Horsham. She died in 1984. They had two sons.
In August 1922, he and his wife sailed to Naples. He described himself as a schoolmaster and gave his address at The College, Windermere.
After a divorce, he married his second wife, Lilian Aimee Johnston at the end of 1935.
By the end of 1936, he had become the Branch Manager of the National Employers Mutual General Insurance Association Ltd with its office at Boswell House, Broad Street, Oxford.
He was on the Headquarters Staff of Western Command when he died on 13 December 1942 in the Towcester area.
He is buried in the churchyard at Bledington, near Chipping Norton on the Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire border. Grave 206.
His wife who was living at Endmoor near Kendal in Westmorland died in 1964.
