Gilbert Robertson was born in Liverpool to Gilbert Robertson Sandbach, a West Indian Merchant with companies in Liverpool and Demerara, and his wife, Harriet Jane Rushworth. Young Gilbert’s father and grandfather were Oxford graduates, his father died in 1907. His cousin Hugh Handley Sandbach came up to Christ Church in 1897 and was killed on 4 November 1914.

Gilbert was educated at Farnborough School and Eton and came up to Christ Church in 1910.

He obtained a commission in the Denbighshire Yeomanry as a Second Lieutenant in the Spring of 1911, being promoted Lieutenant in August 1914 and Captain in 1916. He was called up at the outbreak of war and served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Egypt and Palestine from March 1916.

He was wounded on 16 June 1917 in Gaza and died in Nurreiah Military Hospital, Cairo on 3 July.

Probate was granted on 27 March 1918 to his mother, living at Rossett, Denbighshire, his effects amounted to £10,987 9s 6d.
