Anthony was the son of Mathew Fortescue-Brickdale, O.B.E. and his wife, Cicely Muriel Bankes. He was born in Mauritius.
It is not known what his father was doing in Mauritius, but described as Captain Fortescue-Bankes he took over the Mauritius Scout Troop becoming Scoutmaster and Assistant District Commissioner in the East of London, in 1921 and he was awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours of 1932 for “Services in the relief of sufferers from the recent hurricane in Mauritius”.
Anthony’s grandfather read law at Christ Church and became Chief Registrar and reformed the Land Registry. He was knighted. [Sir Charles Fortescue-Brickdale 1857-1944]
Anthony followed his father and was educated at Winchester. He Matriculated in 1940 and spent a year at Christ Church.
He was a Lieutenant in the King's African Rifles, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) when he was killed on 9 January 1943.
He is buried in Diego Suarez War Cemetery, Madagascar Plot 2 E 4
He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour.
