William Norgrove was the son of Alfred Henry Ashfield and his wife Emily nee Bayliss, of Canterbury Gate, Christ Church, Oxford.
In the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses, Alfred Ashfield was a College Porter. Alfred and Emily’s other child, Cecil, died in 1901 aged 7.
In the 1911 census, William was living in Oxford with his parents, shown as a clerk in the municipal rates department. He died on 6 December 1918 at 19 Stationary Hospital in Port Amelia, Mozambique. The worst recorded influenza outbreak occurred in Mozambique at that time.
He wrote his Will whilst he was on active service in the Royal Medical Corps and his mother Emily Ashfield was the beneficiary: £210. 6s 11d.
Private Ashfield’s name appears on a part of the War Memorial reserved for those who had not been students at Christ Church but choristers, college servants or - in his case - lived at the College.
