Killed in action aged 18

Ninian Mark Kerr was born in Rutland Gate, London, the fourth and youngest son of the Rev. the Hon Alberic Bertie, son of 6th Earl of Abingdon, and Lady Caroline McDonnell daughter of the 10th Earl of Antrim.
Educated at Evelyns and Winchester, on the outbreak of war he was admitted to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and in December 1914 posted to the 60th Rifles. He was attached to the 6th Reserve Regiment until March when he joined the 4th Battalion at the Front. He was killed in action at Hooge, near Ypres and buried there. He is commemorated on Panel 51 and 53 at the Menin Gate.
His commanding officer wrote “I will not say more now than that I sympathise with you [and with my regiment] over the loss of one of the finest and most fearlessly capable lads I ever met. He was quite exceptional.”
His Estate amounted to £180. Administration granted to his father.
His name is on the War Memorial, an alabaster tablet, in the church of All Hallows, Gedling on the outskirts of Nottingham where his father was the Rector from 1887 until 1924. The East Window is a memorial to those who died in the First World War.
