Roger was the son of Sir Philip Chetwode 7th Bt & 1st Baron Chetwode and his wife, Alice Cotton. His sister married John Betjeman, Poet Laureate.
He was educated at Eton and matriculated in 1925. He graduated with a 3rd in History in 1928.
In the early 1930s, Roger went to New York to train as a banker. He had arrived in New York on the Europa on 10 September 1931. He must have gone home in late 1932, as he returned there on the Majestic on 28 December 1932.
The New York Times reported:
“Lady Chetwode, one of the leading social figures of England and the wife of the Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in India, arrived in New York yesterday in a tourist third cabin of the Majestic. She is here to see her son, Roger Charles George Chetwode, who is studying for a financial career in the banking house of J.P. Morgan & Co. She will be the guest of Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt. Asked why she travelled in such simplicity Lady Chetwode replied: "I am only here for a fortnight to see my son. Why should I spend a lot of money uselessly to do it? We were very comfortable in the tourist accommodations."
On 19 May 1936, he married in Westminster, the Hon. Patricia Berry daughter of the 1st Baron Camrose. They had two sons.
On 4 October 1937 with his wife, he arrived in New York and described himself as a banker.
He was gazetted on 14 June 1938 on the Supplementary Reserve of Officers as transferring from the Buckinghamshire Battalion Oxford & Buckinghamshire L.I to the City of London Light A.A. Brigade with the rank of Captain.
The following notice appeared in the London Gazette. [H.C. Le Marchant was a descendant of the Baring banking dynasty and H.S. Lefevre were Merchant Bankers.]
NOTICE is hereby given that the Partnership lately subsisting between us, the undersigned, Herbert Carey Le Marchant, Duncan Alexander Stirling and Roger Charles George Chetwode, carrying on business as Merchants at 16, Bishopsgate, London, E.C.2, under the style or firm of H. S. LEFEVRE & CO., has been dissolved by mutual consent as from the 3ist day of December 1938 so far as regards the said Roger Charles George Chetwode, who then retired from the said firm. The remaining partners will continue to carry on the said business in Partnership under the same style or firm of H. S. Lefevre & Co.—Dated this third day of January 1939-

Roger died in St Ives on 14 August 1940 whilst serving as a Captain in the Royal Artillery 48 Lt A.A. Regiment.
