Mark Hibbert was born in Pendleton, Lancashire to William Morton Philips, a 'manufacturer of tapes, sewing cottons and small wares', and his wife, Caroline Anne Kate Stopford.
Mark was educated at Eton, coming up to Christ Church in 1905. It is not known what he did after graduation. In 1911, his parents and sisters were living at 32 Chesham Place, London with 12 staff. In 1914 he married Eileen Mary O’Sullivan. They had two daughters Mary Eileen born on 4 December 1914 and Joan Evelyn born on 15 December 1915.
He commenced service in May 1916 as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion attached to the 1st South Staffordshire Regiment and was killed at Passchendaele on 4 October 1917.
He is commemorated in St. Mary’s Church, Checkley Staffordshire, in the South Aisle chapel with a window by H B Comper given in memory of Mark Hibbert Philips killed in the Great War 1914-18 by his parents. His name is engraved in the window.
Probate was granted to his wife of 227 Cromwell Road, London on 20 April 1918. He left £1211-10s-4d.
