James Edward Mainwaring was born in Devizes, the son of the Revd Edward Farquhar, Curate of Devizes, and his wife, Mary Ellerton Teal. His mother died before 1881, by which time the family had moved to Doulting near Shepton Mallet where Mr Farquhar had the Living, and employed six staff.
James was at school at Eton, Matriculated from Christ Church on 8 June 1889, and in the 1891 census was living with his family at Bradley at Wooton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire shown as a theological student.
By 1901, he was a solicitor living with three servants, at 18 Pembridge Crescent in London. In 1911, he was living in Gentlemen’s Chambers at 8 Duke Street, Westminster, employed as a Private Secretary.
In August 1914 he commenced Service in the ranks before being commissioned Major and serving in France. He was killed in the Battle of the Ancre on 15 September 1916.
The Farquhar family had connections with Hallgreen Castle Inverbervie Kincardineshire from the early 1800s and the tall lectern in Bervie church was given in memory of Major J.E.M. Farquhar, Laird of Hallgreen, killed in action. He is also commemorated on the Bervie War Memorial, Inverbervie.
The Probate document gives Major Farquhar’s addresses as 8 Duke Street, St James and Hallgreen Kincardine NB. His Estate amounted to £9299 15s 10d, probate granted to Francis Danvers Sladen Esq.
