For almost 900 years this church has stood here as a place of worship and prayer. The Cathedral is a working building, with a dual role as the cathedral for the diocese of Oxford and the college's chapel. Services are held daily and the Cathedral is open for private prayer via the Tom Gate entrance.

St Frideswide

The shrine

The Shrine of St Frideswide, the patron saint of the city, the university and the diocese of Oxford, lies at the heart of the Cathedral.

The Cathedral today stands on the site of the Augustine Priory founded in the 12th century and St Frideswide's shrine has been a popular destination for pilgrims for hundreds of years.

In the 16th century, Catherine of Aragon prayed at the Shrine in the hope of giving birth to a son.

Becket in stained glass

Stained glass

The Cathedral possesses a rich heritage of stained glass. The Becket Window in the Lucy Chapel dates back to 1320. Not only is the glass of particularly high quality, but this is one of very few images of Becket to survive the Reformation.

Examples of painted glass created in the 1630s by the Dutch artist Abraham van Linge include the Jonah window and the Bishop King Window.

Victorian windows include the huge St Michael Window in the north transept. In the Latin Chapel is the St Frideswide Window by the famous pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones, just one of five windows he designed for the Cathedral.

Architecture

The Cathedral showcases centuries of architectural development, from the Norman construction of the Priory of St Frideswide in the 12th century, through the emergence of Gothic architecture, to the remodelling of the Cathedral by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 19th century.

The jewel in the crown of the Cathedral’s architecture is its stone vaulted chancel ceiling, probably constructed in c.1400, and considered to be one of the finest examples of its type in any English Cathedral.
