Bachelor of Fine Art (Christ Church, Oxford, 1994); PhD (Bristol, 1998)

I am the Anatomy Course Tutor at the Ruskin School of Art, where I use the subjects of human anatomy, drawing and contemporary art practice to teach imagination. At Christ Church I look after the Fine Art students and also teach drawing to students from across the University.

I am a fine artist, writer, broadcaster and anatomist, and my work explores the relationship between science, history and art. The author of Anatomy for the Artist (2001), The Drawing Book (2005), Botany for the Artist (2010), and co-author of The New Sylva: a Discourse of Forest and Orchard Trees for the Twenty-First Century (2014), I am dedicated to sharing and encouraging visual intelligence in others through my drawings, teaching and broadcasting worldwide. 

At home I enjoy dry stone walling, for meditation and to repair or enhance old gardens. I am currently building a walled orchard. Scrambling in the mountains of North Wales is a favourite pleasure, especially if I can hunt for a good tree to draw.
