Qualifications

MA; DPhil; FRCO

Academic background

I read Music at Oxford and was an Organ Scholar. My doctorate concerned the secular songs of Guillaume de Machaut, and I completed the DPhil while serving as the John Brookman Graduate Organ Scholar. I have held College Lectureships in Oxford since 1995 at Christ Church, Oriel College and Trinity College.

Undergraduate teaching

I teach Techniques of Composition, History of Music, and Keyboard Skills.

Research interests

My research concerns compositional practice and choice. In particular, my interests lie in music before 1450 (especially French music of the 13th and 14th centuries); early Beethoven; 20th-century music (including Jazz); musical analysis and theory; and composition.
