Cathedral Choir To Make First Live Appearance on Radio 3 Since 2018
A service sung by the Cathedral Choir will be broadcast to the nation on Radio 3’s Choral Evensong tomorrow, marking their first live appearance on the programme in almost 8 years.
You can tune in or join us in-person here at the Cathedral. The music for the service includes Dum Transisset Sabbatum by John Taverner, the first Organist and Master of Choristers of Cardinal College (later Christ Church). Much of Taverner’s surviving music is thought to have been composed for the choir during his tenure here (1526-1530), and this work may have been sung here at the time during Matins on Easter Day.
The choir will also sing canticles by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Tomás Luis de Victoria, alongside one of Claudio Monteverdi’s setting of Psalm 126 from his famous Vespers of 1610. This text is closely associated with Christ Church – commonly known as ‘The House’ - through its opening line: “Except the Lord build the house”.
The service is a public act of worship, and we would be delighted for you to join us in the congregation. Please be seated by 2.45 pm, ready for a short briefing from the producer before the broadcast begins.
The service will be repeated on Radio 3 at 6pm on Sunday 3 May, and will also be available online via the BBC website at https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002vcnc.
