Diocese of Oxford signs Armed Forces Covenant in Cathedral service
The Diocese of Oxford re-affirmed its commitment to armed forces communities with the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant during a special service of Choral Evensong last week.
The Armed Forces Covenant was introduced by the UK government in 2011 following a campaign led by the Royal British Legion and Poppyscotland. It recognises the duty of care owed to those who serve and their families.
The document was signed by the Bishop of Oxford, The Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft, and the Dean of Christ Church, The Very Revd Professor Sarah Foot, alongside Major General Peter Rowell MBE, the Commandant and Chief Executive of the Defence Academy (which lies within the Diocese of Oxford). The signing was preceded by addresses from Major General Rowell and from the Archdeacon of Oxford and Christ Church Canon, the Venerable Jonathan Chaffey, former Chaplain-in-Chief to the RAF.
Following the signing, Bishop Steven said: “As a diocese we are keen to support the service communities across Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, and their families.
“Today’s signing marks a significant step in formalising our commitment to do this and is a recognition of all that our armed forces give through their dedication and service.”
