Background
Richard read Music at St John’s College (Oxford), after which he took up a place studying Organ at the Royal College of Music (MMus). Whilst at the RCM, he was Organ Scholar at St Paul's Cathedral, where, in addition to playing for services and training choristers, he also played at a number of important occasions, including the funeral of Baroness Thatcher. From 2017-2023 Richard was Sub Organist at Guildford Cathedral. He holds the Soloist (Artist) Diploma of the Royal Danish Academy of Music; as a recitalist he has performed in venues from North America to Australasia, and concerto appearances include Lou Harrison's Concerto for Organ with Percussion Orchestra (collaborating with conductor Thomas Søndergård).
In addition to his liturgical and performing work, Richard is active as a researcher and writer; recent work on the organ music of Ethel Smyth has uncovered two unpublished pieces. He is a member of the joint steering committee of the British Organ Archive, and is Reviews Editor for the British Institute of Organ Studies.

He accompanies the Cathedral services when the Cathedral Choirs are in residence, and plays for special services, concerts and recordings. His educative remit includes overseeing the boy chorister probationer training programme, and developing an outreach programme centred around the organ.
