Stipendiary Lecturership in Computer Science (six weighted hours, two year fixed-term contract)
Christ Church invites applications for a two year fixed-term Stipendiary Lecturership in theoretical Computer Science. This is a temporary, fixed-term position to fulfil the college teaching need in expectation of a new Tutorial Fellow in Computer Science being appointed for the 2027 to 2028 academic year. Therefore, the appointment carries with it no expectation of permanent employment at Christ Church.
Christ Church makes eleven offers per year to read Computer Science and its Joint Schools. The exact distribution does vary, but it is usually five in Computer Science, four in Computer Science & Philosophy, and two in Mathematics & Computer Science. We are a large and lively subject, with many academic and social events taking place throughout the year. Examples are the third-year talks in Michaelmas term, “ask anything” chats with special guests from industry, and the annual Christ Church Computer Science lecture and formal dinner. We also run a small scheme that encourages our students to contribute to fundamental open-source libraries during the summer vacation.
The successful candidate will deliver six weighted hours of teaching per week, averaged over the three eight-week terms of each academic year. Applicants should be able to teach: Discrete Mathematics, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Models of Computation, and Algorithms and Data Structures. The exact courses tutored may vary but would likely consist of these.
The successful candidate will have a doctorate, or at least a substantial part of one complete, in Computer Science or a closely related field. Evidence of the skills for successful tutorial teaching, including the ability to explain problems and ideas lucidly, listen to students’ questions and views sympathetically, and enthuse and inspire them is essential.
