Oxford Edge, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Christ Church Access are delighted to announce a poster competition on the theme of ‘Solving Global Challenges through Entrepreneurship and Innovation’.

Competition aims

Through this competition we aim to encourage reflection, creativity, and problem solving in tackling what you think is a world challenge at the moment.

As well as potentially coming up with an idea for a new venture (e.g. a charity, a social organisation, a creative initiative, or a business), you would be adding strength to future university applications by exploring an area of interest outside of school, developing your own thoughts on a chosen topic, and communicating these to an expert audience.

What does the competition involve?

The question you are asked to answer is “What global challenge would you solve with entrepreneurship and how?” We welcome submissions in one of three strands: Medical & Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities.

Selected participants and one supporter will be invited to attend a day at the Oxford Edge and Christ Church on Tuesday 10 March to celebrate their achievement, present their posters, and learn more about entrepreneurship and undergraduate study at Oxford. The provisional timetable for the day is:

10:00 – 10:30    Arrival at Oxford Edge and registration

10:30 – 10:45    Q&A with student entrepreneurs

10:45 – 11:30    Pupils: poster displays and two-minute presentations / Supporters: tour of the Oxford Edge Centre

11:30 – 12:00    Oxford walk on the way to Christ Church

12:00 – 13:00    Lunch in the Christ Church Hall

13:00 – 14:00    Oxford and the role of super-curriculars in the application process

14:00 – 14:45    Christ Church tour with student ambassadors

14:45 – 15:15    Poster commendations and closing remarks

15:15 – 15:30    Reflection and evaluation

The event will be free of charge and lunch will be provided. We would not want the cost of travelling to Oxford to prevent students from participating and are able to offer support with travel costs by public transport (e.g. buses and trains) to participants who would otherwise be unable to attend.

Who is it for?

The competition is for UK pupils from state-maintained schools in Year 11 or 12. We warmly invite entries from pupils who:

  • would be the first in their immediate family to go to university
  • are or have been eligible for Free School Meals or the 16-19 Bursary
  • are young carers
  • have been in care
  • are from areas of socio-economic disadvantage, measured by ACORN category or Index of Multiple Deprivation (for more information see www.ox.ac.uk/context)
  • and any student currently attending a state-maintained school regardless of meeting the extra contextual criteria above.

Guidance on producing posters

Posters should clearly define the challenge being addressed, with a clear narrative that states the problem and potential solution. You can include visuals and graphics to help explain the idea. Suggested word count is 500 - 800.

Posters will be assessed for impact, sustainability, originality, clarity, and design.

How to take part?

Pupils are invited to fill in an application form and submit their poster here by midday on 5 January.
