'This Is Geography' video competition winners

Christ Church hosts a celebration day on Saturday 14 May for winners of the 'This Is Geography' video competition.

The contest, organised by Access and Schools Liaison Officer Joel Butler and Geography tutor Dr Rosalie Warnock, was aimed at pupils in Years 7–10 attending state schools.

Pupils were invited to submit a short video of no more than roughly five minutes on a geographical issue or phenomenon in their area, filmed using whatever technology they had available and presented in any style of their choice.

We were delighted to receive a diverse collection of videos, ranging from detailed presentations to on-location documentaries, and even animations!

Winning entrants were invited to spend a day at Christ Church learning about the Geography course at Oxford, thinking about university and future choices, and chatting to current Christ Church Geography students. The day concluded with a taster session on ‘Marvel and Geopolitics’ led by Dr Warnock and an announcement of our overall favourite videos.

The two lucky winners of Oxford University teddy bears were Kyle, who is in Year 7 at Harris Academy Crystal Palace, for ‘The Yellow Brick Ridge’, and Ella, who is in Year 8 at Southlands High School, for ‘Is Fracking the Future?’

The range of topics covered by participating pupils was extensive and impressive, with deep dives into local regeneration projects sitting alongside considerations of the north-south divide, air quality, urban traffic and mobility, and more.
