Qualifications

BSc University of Bristol, DPhil University of Oxford

Academic background

I am a Nuffield Department of Medicine Senior Research Fellow, and Professor in the Division of Structural of Biology (STRUBI). In 1999 I was recruited to Oxford, and was awarded a Royal Society Research Fellowship which allowed me to establish my own independent research group, where I employ structural biology, biochemical and cellular methods to study viruses. I previously held a joint appointment between Oxford University and Diamond Light Source and now currenty Head the Oxford Particle Imaging Centre (OPIC).

Research interests

My research has direct relevance to public health, particularly in the context of pandemic preparedness. I have Wellcome Trust and PAD funding that supports significant research into influenza virus and Nipah virus replication, focussed on understanding the molecular mechanisms of RNA virus transcription and replication, which has direct implications for the generation of novel antiviral strategies.
