Qualifications
I have a PhD in Computer Science specialised in statistical machine learning and AI. The thesis won the Diane Campbell Hunt Memorial Award. I am also a Fellow of Higher Education Academy, UK (FHEA) which is a senior qualification in recognition of tertiary teaching.
Academic background
As with most academics, I have several inter-connected roles and affiliations. At Oxford, I am a Lecturer in Computer Science at Christ Church, Lead tutor in Information Engineering and a Fellow of Linacre College, Oxford. I am a Principal Research Fellow at University College London and a Theme/Group Lead at the Alan Turing Institute, London (UK's national institute for AI). I am an invited expert in Responsible AI with the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI, part of OECD). Earlier, I used to be a postdoctoral researcher at Oxford, and have been based from Oxford since 2019.
Undergraduate teaching
As Lecturer in Computer Science, I teach several foundational topics in computing to 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students covering discrete maths, stats and probability, programming theory, models of computation, etc. Also as lead tutor for information engineering, I teach several advanced 3rd year and 4th year courses covering image/signal analysis, Bayesian learning, machine learning, computer vision and deep learning.
Research interests
I lead TRAIL (Transparent and Reliable AI Lab) that is shared between UCL and Turing and we develop emerging AI models that are explainable and trustable by design, we call it Frontier AI Assurance. Though the methods we develop are foundational and generalisable across domains, we usually demonstrate them in high impact applications in personalised healthcare and precision medicine, particularly computational cancer tasks with multimodal data (imaging, text, clinicogenomics, etc).
Entrepreneurial work
I was the co-founder and technical director (CTO) of Geia Ltd, a B2B SaaS consultancy to help SMEs to become more energy efficient and save money while being sustainable. The startup won the Callaghan Innovation Award.
